Disturbance and fire at Yarl’s Wood Removal Centre: special investigation report

Published:

This investigation was commissioned as part of the overarching inquiry into the events that took place at Yarl’s Wood Removal Centre on 14 and 15 February 2002.

The facility opened in November 2001 to house failed asylum seekers, illegal migrants and other people who had not been identified or who were deemed to be unsafe in the community. After 3 months, there was a major disturbance that resulted in half the centre being destroyed by fire.
