Important notice to friends, family and next of kin of those in custody

Published:

As of today, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman’s complaint investigations department will be known as Independent Prisoner Complaint Investigations (IPCI for short) to those in prison and the youth custody estate.

This new sub brand name, which is part of the PPO, is to make it clearer in our name about what we do in our complaints work.

We will still be known as the PPO to those on probation and under immigration detention with complaints.

We will also still carry out fatal incident investigations and share learning with the services in our remit as the PPO.

If your loved one in prison or the youth custody estate needs help with their complaint, please refer them to IPCI. Our staff are visiting prisons over the coming months to communicate this name change and to give them new IPCI publicity materials.

The PPO is not going anywhere – we still independently investigate complaints but under a new, clearer name. Your loved ones must still follow the internal prison complaints process first before contacting us.
